Shooter

The movie trailer for Shooter shows scenes that flow together and give the video rhythm. It begins by examining or panning across the mountains and forest to show us that this is the setting. It then shows the revealing factor by zooming in on the home of a man in these mountains where he lives with his girlfriend and dog. Everyone is smiling and happy until it shows some people pull into the driveway, then the tone becomes more serious. The owner of the house is then shown aiming a gun down range. The camera then points to the object he is aiming at which then explodes as the bullet hits it.

Research Topic

For my research topic, I'm choosing to write about soccer. I chose this topic because I've played soccer for most of my life and I'm very interested in it. Soccer was invented a very long time ago by some Chinese but this is skeptical because many cultures like Greece and Rome claim to have started the sport. This sport has grown into the most popular sport around the world and also my personal favorite. Every year, you see more and more soccer fields and leagues spring up in the U.S. due to its increasing popularity here. Soccer is a very high paying sport on the professional level. The professionals play for clubs. Every country has its own leagues but the major leagues that most people know about would be the MLS in the US, the EPL in England, the Bundesliga in Germany, and La Liga in Spain. These leagues (minus the MLS) contain the highest caliber of play in the world. If the players are good enough, they could get a chance to represent their country in international competition. There are many chances to play on a national team in several tournaments or friendlies. The largest tournament in the world is the World Cup. The qualifiers for this tournament include 204 teams from all over the world. This is narrowed down to only 32 of the best teams for the competition. Recently, the location for the World Cup in 2022 was picked. It was down to either the US or Qatar. Qatar was chosen for the location which made many of us mad because we felt the US would be a better choice.

Research Topics

The three research topics I chose for possibilities for my research paper are the Large Hadron Collider, Autism, and the World Cup.

The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It's located near Geneva, Switzerland. This is interesting to me because the purpose to create black holes by shooting atoms at each other.

Next, autism would be a interesting thing to research because I don't feel I know very much about it. I could discuss the signs, treatments, symptoms, and aspects of life for someone affected by it.

Finally, the last topic I could research is the World Cup. I could discuss the long history of this event as well as the many places it has been. Also, I could talk about the upcoming World Cup in Qatar and the advantages and disadvantages of this location.

The Great Analysis of Advertisements

Mercedes Advertisement
http://www.toxel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/uad16.jpg
This advertisement for the Mercedes-Benz is very exaggerated. It is designed to make the audience (hopeful customers) believe that this car will give them the ability to drive anywhere they desire, even an impossible obstacle, such as a building.
BIC Razor Advertisement
http://www.toxel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/uad3.jpg
Although this advertisement is very plain, it sends a strong message. It depicts the BIC razor as a product with a very big presence that has the ability to conquer any kind of obstacle you come across, like a really big beard. This advertisement is also very exaggerated.
Skin Cancer Towel Advertisement
http://www.toxel.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/uad15.jpg
This is a very clever advertisement. It basically says that if you aren't careful during the summer time and if you don't wear sunscreen, you'll get skin cancer and run the risk of dying. This is a very blunt way to advertise this, but it proves a point.

Everyday Rhetoric

Everyday we see examples of rhetoric in advertising, magazines, newspapers, and television commercials that use words and images to persuade us to do something like go see a movie or buy a CD.  You can find rhetoric in almost everything you see in common media today.  People in advertising take advantage of any and every available means to use rhetoric because they know what strategies will work to convince their audience to do something.  Living on a college campus, I know that I see at dozens of examples of visual rhetoric a day through various flyers and advertisements, both in person and through the internet.  And you obviously cannot turn on a television and expect not to see multiple ads on every channel that employ multiple types of rhetoric.  Visual rhetoric seems to be the type that has the strongest impact on the average media consumer.  The American media understands that it's audience typically has a good enough visual literacy to comprehend advertisements and be persuaded by them.  However, we must understand that rhetoric in text also goes a long way in making and communicating statements about society.  We see this type of rhetoric in editorial pieces, comic strips, etc.  If we contain the ability to analyze the use of rhetoric in visuals, texts, or anything else, we can discern the persuasion tactics employed by the media everyday.  We can also use this skill to employ rhetoric in our own writing and speaking.
